Top Marks for The Civic’s Work Placement

Barnsley Youth Choir member and University of Chester undergraduate Emily Ritchie, is awarded a First for her work placement year at The Civic in Barnsley.

Since opening in 2009, The Civic have been passionate about supporting work placements to further the skills and employability of those who wish to work in the competitive arts industry. Helen Ball (Chief Executive at The Civic) comments: “We were delighted to be contacted by Emily to complete her work placement year with us as part of her Events Management degree. This type of placement was a first for us, so we really wanted to make it a useful experience for her.”

The 21 year-old Barnsley resident began her work placement at The Civic in September 2014. Emily comments: “It was the only placement opportunity that I had seen that interested me and would be beneficial to me and my degree. Helen created a programme specifically for me, something which I know is rare in work placements.

Throughout her work placement at The Civic Emily put her academic learning into practice and became a valued member of the team. Emily comments she enjoyed “learning from the staff who passed on their experiences within the arts and gaining practical experience in areas that aren’t covered on my course”.

Working alongside Helen Ball, Emily attended key partnership meetings, conducted research as a starting point for her dissertation and planned a series of events.

Her first events management project was a Fashion Show fundraising event in April which raised £2025 for The Civic and Barnsley Hospice charities. Emily explains: “I was the main point of contact for The Civic and organised the set up on the day. Being involved in the partnership with Barnsley Hospice allowed me to work alongside experienced industry professionals, who provided valuable guidance and advice".

Following the success of the fashion show, Emily helped organise the launch event for Nick Sharratt Exhibition: Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants exhibition in June. Emily continues: “This experience enabled me to build confidence in dealing with a wide range of people and identify my strengths and weaknesses. It was busy and challenging, but a brilliant day for visitors, The Civic and myself”.

Helen Ball, Chief Executive comments:

“We are thrilled to learn Emily has achieved a First for her placement year with us. It has been a pleasure having Emily with us, and I hope her time at The Civic has a positive impact on her future career plans.”

Emily concludes:

"Having worked really hard throughout placement and with the assignments, I am really pleased that my grades reflect how much I have enjoyed and learnt from working at The Civic. I am lucky that the placement gave me so much to write about and reflect on, as well as allowing me to develop future goals that I can work towards in my final year at university this year.”
