The Civic brings knock out play to Shaw Lane
New show about boxing at Shaw Lane this February
From the company that brought you the sold out sport themed performances of The Damned United and The Life and Soul comes a brand new play set in the ring.
Cornermen is written by playwright and boxer Oli Forsyth - based on his experience of the world of fighting. After playing to sold-out houses in London, at the Edinburgh Festival and in festivals around the UK, including VAULT Festival and Brighton Fringe it comes to Barnsley to floor new audiences.
“A real knockout” The Stage
Mickey and his team of corner men never seem to have much luck in the boxing world. The fighters they manage always end up losing and, after a bruising last outing, no one wants to work with them. Until, that is, they sign a young boxer whose winning ways catapult them into a world of success they’ve never dreamed of.
Is Sid Sparks their meal ticket to fame and fortune?
“A strong play, a real achievement” Broadway Baby
Cornermen is a rare glimpse into the seedier side of professional sport; it perfectly captures the behind the scenes stories of Mickey’s team and their search for riches and adulation. Four actors tell the tale in this dynamic and fascinating play which exposes what goes on outside the ring and works for boxing devotees and those new to the ‘sport’.
Cornermen is part of Civic on tour and will be performed at Shaw Lane Sports Club. The ticket price includes a free drink.
