Rugby Returns to Roots for new theatrical performances at The Civic.
Yorkshire Performance, Yorkshire Story, Yorkshire Cast. A Sporty Story Showing in Barnsley.
From Batley’s Golden Mile to Australia’s Gold Coast comes Kevin Fegan’s new play The Ruck, based on the real-life story of the first British girls’ rugby league team to tour Australia. The Ruck will be at The Civic, Barnsley on Friday 23 September.
All the way from Yorkshire, the original 'County of Origin’ of Rugby League, comes a new force to be reckoned with in the sport: the mighty Batley Girls Under 16 team.
This group of girls from the small Yorkshire town of Batley have grown up together and are ready for tough challenges on and off the pitch; but are they prepared for what’s in store on the other side of the world?
Full of teenage drama The Ruck follows the story of these inspirational young women as they overcome boy (and girl) problems, friendship dramas, racial discrimination and deep-hidden family secrets, all set against the backdrop of a changing community in a diverse industrial town. In a story told through music, poetry, theatre and sporty performances they prove that “This Girl Can”.
Director Joyce Branagh said: “For me The Ruck is a really exciting new production to be working on. It’s a beautiful new play that is vibrant, funny and extremely moving about Yorkshire, about the problems of being a teenager (and being a parent of a teenager) and how a brilliant game like rugby league can be a support, a focus, and a metaphor for the ups and downs of everyday life – always remember: 'try try again!’”
The play is based on the real life story of 50 strong party of young rugby players and their families who travelled to all the way down under for a one-month tournament. Writer Kevin Fegan followed their journey, getting inspiration from the team. The Ruck is produced by the Lawrence Batley Theatre and Creative Scene and is a collaboration of much Yorkshire talent including director Joyce Branagh, and lead roles played by Yorkshire Born Jon Adamson and Emma Ashton.
The production sees the return of Josie Cerise to the Barnsley stage, after her fantastic performance in Lightning Under Their Skirts earlier this year. Josie also has a personal connection to the sport as her dad played rugby league semi-professionally. Sheffield’s own Emily Spowage also stars as the quiet but strong character, Heaton.
The Ruck is at The Civic on Friday 23 September at 7:30pm. Tickets are £14 full price and £12 concessions.
