New British film screened for the first time in Barnsley
New film screening at The Civic: When Your Life’s a Joke it’s time to Stand Up
The Civic are delighted to host an early screening of a very British new film, Last Laugh by John Godber OBE.
This black comedy / family drama follows a college lecturer, Martin Dawson played by Nick Figgis and his hope to escape from obscurity by having a screenplay made into a film.
With iconic Yorkshire scenery and architecture supplying a background to the film, the action takes place in many familiar places in Hull, Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors. This is a gritty northern drama with a whole lot of soul that celebrates the natural humour of everyday life with regional language and sounds. As well as its local appeal, The Last Laugh is a universal story that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds illustrating the sometimes confusing and conflicted nature of love of all kinds.
Reaching a crossroads in his personal life, university lecturer Martin Dawson decides to retreat into the arms of his parents, Len and Joan. On a weekend break at a cottage in the countryside, however, his parents' constant bickering, nit-picking and long conversations about nothing lead the already stressed out Martin to a rather sinister conclusion...
“part Withnail And I and part Billy Elliot, a story of dark into light, a story of discovery and revelation, of pain into joy but most of all a story of real life. It is typically northern with rough magical humour that grabs the audience and draws them in to, what in the end is a loving tale of final Triumph over adversity and understanding of family past.” - Toyah Willcoxs website
A comedy based on the successful stage play Weekend Breaks by John Godber. Winner of Best Director of a Feature Film at Around International Film Festival, Last Laugh is a story of discovery and revelation but most of all a story of real life directed by Daniel Coll starring Nick Figgis, Jane Thornton, John Godber, Victoria Ekanoye, Amy Thompson, Ann Micklethwaite, Jack Brady and Toyah Willcox and Barnsley actor Dan O'Brien
