Join The Conversation With A Brand New Season At The Civic
The Civic are starting a conversation with an exciting new season of programming for the coming months full of art, theatre, music, circus and so much more. This season we are proud to showcase some incredible talent from both local folk, and those from further afield.
Here are a few highlights to show you what’s in store.
Party time! What better way to start the season than some fun in the sun? Celebrate our annual Civic Garden Party with a family friendly day in the gardens. Enjoy free live entertainment throughout the day: experience a 1970 street theatre spectacle; help choreograph a new dance; enjoy a slapstick puppet show and treat your ears to some fantastic local music. Bring your picnic and join the party! The Civic Garden Party is on Saturday 15 September from 11:00am – 3:00pm.
We’re bringing the big top to town. Marking 250 years of circus we have 4 amazing new circus shows tumbling in. Show-stopping acrobatics, aerial circus storytelling, slick choreography and humour, juggling, rhythm and so much more to take your breath away. To start, why not check out Shift, by award winning circus troupe Barely Methodical. This is an explosive display of acrobatics that will alter perspectives and spin your head around. Shift is on Thursday 20 September and Friday 21 September at 7:30pm.
There’s a fashion exhibition for all in our gallery. Time is running out to see our highly acclaimed T-shirts exhibition The T-shirt: Cult | Culture | Subversion in which we take a look at the most popular garment of recent history. This exciting exhibition includes some of the most influential T-Shirt designs spanning over 50 years with more than 100 rare and ground-breaking examples featuring many iconic images and slogans including rare surviving pieces by Vivienne Westwood. See if you can spot some of your own T’s. The T-shirt: Cult | Culture | Subversion is on until 22 September 2018
Get your camera ready for a visual treat. From October the Gallery will keep the season bright with an exclusive exhibition by Barnsley lass Liz West, including a newly commissioned work made especially for The Civic. The first major exhibition in her hometown, Colour Field will feature selected installation and sculptural works using light and colour to create vivid environments. This amazing exhibition will be accompanied by the prints of Joan Miró. Liz West: Colour Field and Joan Miró: Prints are on 13 October – 22 December
Continuing to show off the pride of Barnsley, we are delighted to host Barnsley’s own Rachael McShane and her brand new band The Cartographers. An original member of the award winning folk big band Bellowhead, Rachael is a multi-talented singer, fiddle and viola player and is bringing her traditional songs to Barnsley. Rachael Mcshane & The Cartographers are on Friday 2 November at 8:00pm
Drink and a show? Taking theatre into the community, we have a Red Ladder and Civic on Tour partnership. Together we are bringing high quality theatre into accessible locations, with shows at Shaw Lane Sports Club, Staincross Village Hall and Jump Club. This seasons partnership will consist of a total of 5 performances, including: The Last Seam, which pays tribute to the people of the coalfields bringing to life stories of miners and their loved ones; A rugby themed show, Playing The Joker; and When We Were Brothers, an uplifting story exploring themes of mental health and friendship. Tickets for these excellent performances are all under £7. Some tickets even include a free drink, so you there’s no excuse to miss out on a great theatre experience.
As always, we are delighted to be bringing some of the top comedians to Barnsley, with the likes of: Chris Ramsey; forensic mind reader and The star of The Royal Variety Performance Colin Cloud; Pete Firman, and Robert Newman all standing up on our stage. As if that wasn’t enough, The Civic supporter and Barnsley born Toby Foster presents a great night of laughter, hosting some of the best comedians from the UK and international circuit with his Last Laugh Comedy Club in both September and December.
Wrapping up the year in a blanket of snow and Christmas cheer is our exclusive new show, Jack Frost. Commissioned by The Civic, and with a superb northern cast, Jack frost is a new music-filled Christmas show about friendship and the joy of joining in. Holly, a little girl who plays the trumpet, befriends the magical winter sprite Jack Frost. Together they will make music, create mischief and make sure no-one is left outside this Christmas.
