Free Circus Show to Join The Mayors Parade in Barnsley

Dance, Circus, Parkour and Climbing in a entertaining family show at The Mayors Parade.

A free circus performance in Barnsley for The Lord Mayors Parade will feature dance, circus, parkour and climbing.

2018 marks 250 years since the very first circus. The Story began when Philip Astley, a showman, businessman and horse rider drew a circle on the floor and filled it with acts. He created a whole new art form and began what we now know as the circus.

Performance spaces around the world are celebrating this milestone and The Civic, Barnsley is kicking off a creative season of circus, with lots of new and exciting acts to see.

The first amazing piece of circus will come from Kapow Dance, with their amazing show, The Boulderers, a new outdoor production featuring dance, circus, parkour and climbing. The brave team of performers climb the walls, climb one another, get lost, find themselves and inspire anyone who's watching to get outside and play.

Co-Commission by Greentop Circus Sheffield and The Civic, Barnsley supported by the Arts Council of England and Moon Climbing: The Boulderers is the promenade story of Rock Climbers pushing their limits, forming firm friendships and boldly reimagining the city as the crag.

The show starts on the street with a surprising performance of gymnastics where the audience meet the climbers before moving on through the town on a 30min promenade journey. At each site a scene unfolds telling a new piece to the story, inviting us into the exciting world of climbing. The audience follows the show to different locations, and watches on in wonder as our Boulderers explore well known buildings.

There is comedy, fear, transformation, support and bravery. This is a performance full of surprise and fun that will have you on the edge.

Watch out for this dynamic group, climbing a building near you at The Lord Mayors Parade.

Throughout the rest of the year The Civic will continue to celebrate circus with four more unique circus performances: a show stopping acrobatic performance from award winning company Barely Methodical Theatre; an aerial circus performance, four men and a trampoline in an inspirational dance, and a unique juggling show. All this as well as the annual The Civic Garden Party, a free event to be held in Mandela Gardens in September.

The Boulderers is on Saturday 14 July between 11:00am and 1:00pm in Barnsley Town Centre as part of The Mayor’s Parade.
