Barnsley Actress performs in new play
New Play set in a pub takes a humorous look at northern life.
Barnsley born actress returns to the stage in hometown for a brand new play set in a pub.
Following their hugely successful national tour of Hopeless Romantics in 2017, The Civic are delighted to welcome back Reform Theatre with their latest production of TWO, by celebrated playwright Jim Cartwright, the award-winning writer of Little Voice and Road.
The play stars Barnsley’s very own Susan Mitchell, who has appeared in DCI Banks, Emmerdale and Coronation Street where she appeared as Tina’s Mum. It was back in 2014 when Susan was last on stage in her home town of Barnsley, also for Reform Theatre in Kissing Sid James at The Academy.
Two is a gritty yet heart-warming look at northern life filled with tragedy and humour.
Set in a Northern Pub (not The Rovers this time), Susan plays the Landlady alongside Reform Theatre’s own Keith Hukin who plays the Landlord. As the play unfolds the Landlord and Landlady’s cheery greeting and friendly banter barely disguises their contempt for each other. They met outside the pub when they were kids, had their first drink there, courted there, had their twenty firsts there, wedding reception there and now they own the place.
During the course of the evening assorted customers pass through including a little boy left by his father, an event that triggers a move towards a fragile reconciliation between the pub couple as their secret tragedy, swallowed back for seven years, comes to a head after drinking up time.
Susan describes Two as “both funny, emotional and deeply moving. And we all recognise some of the customers characters from our own local.”
Reform Theatre Company is a Sheffield based theatre company established in 1998 by actor and director Keith Hukin as a vehicle for providing accessible, high-quality contemporary theatre productions to audiences throughout the UK. In particular, the company is committed to producing and touring plays by Northern playwrights.
