April Fools - Barnsley launches its first ever Comedy Festival
Barnsley welcomes high profile acts such as Rob Beckett, Ed Byrne, Dave Spikey and Chris Ramsey, up and coming and home grown comedians for the town’s first ever comedy festival this April.
Inspired by The Civic’s impressive line-up of celebrity comedians programmed to perform in April, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council worked in partnership with The Civic and other venues across Barnsley to form the April Fools Comedy Festival.
April Fools Comedy Festival will see top stand-up comedians perform at venues in the town throughout April. The fun starts on Friday 1 April with Manford’s Comedy Club at the Lamproom Theatre and the festival finale will take place at The Civic with a magical comedy show for all the family, on Sunday 1 May.
The festival sees Barnsley's ‘Theatre Royal’ stage live entertainment once again. Converted into a cabaret nightclub many years ago, the town’s old Lyric theatre bears little resemblance its seventeenth century heyday. Now operating as Club Purism, the night club pays tribute to its days as a theatre by hosting comedy nights as part of the April Fools Comedy Festival.
Alongside The Lamproom Theatre, The Civic and Club Purism; The Underground night club, Barnsley College’s Electric Theatre and Barnsley FC’s Oakwell Stadium will also make way for up and coming comedians. With the likes of Stephen Bailey (Celebrity Big Brother’s Bit on the Side), Bethany Black (Channel 4’s Cucumber/Banana/Tofu) and Alfie Moore (Show Me The Funny’ ITV) and many more.
April Fools Comedy Festival will also give local talent to perform in front of a live audience, following a call out last month. Home grown comedians are being encouraged to take part and will have the opportunity to entertain the crowds at various town centre venues. Email your clip to: eventplanning@barnsley.gov.uk
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place and The Civic Board Member, said: “It is great to see such high profile comedians visiting the town for ‘April Fools’, Barnsley Council would love to see local talent taking part and adding to the success of this fantastic festival.”
