All female circus troupe are spinning into town with a fierce new show.
A whirlwind of women, wheels, acrobatics and song make an inspiring show at The Civic
The Civic is to show an exciting evening of Circus as the first all-female Cyr troupe perform this March. Alula Cyr’s debut HYENA explodes onto the UK circus scene in a whirlwind of women, wheels, acrobatics, dance and song.
"HYENA screams girl power at the top of its lungs and coincidentally, represents and embodies the essence of womanhood. A strong show that empowers and inspires" Miro Magazine
This debut production celebrates female strength with awe-inspiring acrobatics. Hyena is an exhilarating show with a mix of wheels, circus, dance and song. Here, the world’s first all-female Cyr wheel trio unveil inventive and previously untried forms of expression using the Cyr wheel - an acrobatic apparatus that consists of a single large ring made of aluminium or steel with a diameter approximately 10 to 15 cm taller than the performer.
HYENA is the culmination of three years’ research into new ways of working with one of circus’ fastest evolving disciplines. Featuring synchronised spinning with three wheels, joining wheels to create striking structures, as well as double and triple spinning on a single wheel – The show will even include never-before-seen set pieces such as the ‘Cyr Ball’ – a ball created with all the wheels to form a sphere in and around which the trio perform.
“A breath-taking fusion of circus, dance and atmospheric effects … The audience was blown away by the sheer, audacious gymnasticity of these highly skilled stunt-tumblers” Peter Yates, London Theatre 1.
Alula Cyr is made up of three performers: Fiona, Jess and Lil. The leg of the tour in Barnsley is a special part for Jessica as she grew up in Castleford (where her family is still based). She started dancing there at age three at the Victoria School of Dancing, later moving into Sports Acro at Wakefield Gymnastics Club and then the Norther School of Contemporary Dance before coming to London and where she met the rest of the troupe at The National Centre for Circus Arts in 2012. They all graduated in 2015 with a combined mission to bring more female-centric circus to the UK.
Co-creator Lil Rice explains, “HYENA is a show about womanhood – it’s about beauty, power and the thin line we walk between being a human and a wild animal. We wanted to make a show that would inspire everyone, particularly women and girls, to find their voices and stand together.“
Boisterous, playful and wild, HYENA is a synchronised display of womanhood, strength and power so come along to The Civic this month for an inspirational show.
Hyena is at The Civic, Barnsley on Thursday 24 March at 7:30pm. Tickets are £12 and £10 conc | 8 child
