A month of laughs in Barnsley with the return of April Fools Barnsley Comedy Festival.

April Fools - Barnsley’s Comedy Festival Is Back

Once again, Barnsley plays host to some of the top comedy acts the country has to offer with April Fools Barnsley Comedy Festival 2019.

April 2019 promises to be a right laugh in Barnsley and that’s no joke. It’s time for the return of April Fools Barnsley Comedy Festival and The Civic couldn’t be more serious about the quality of their stand-up comedy. The annual month of comedy, will brighten Barnsley’s mood with a variety of comedians performing across the town.

The fun starts on 3 April with Bilal Zafar at Zinc Bar and continues throughout the month, with all kinds of comedy happening this April. Described as "Witty and absorbing" (The Times), Zafar was nominated Best Newcomer at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has appeared on the likes of BBC Three, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 live and the BBC Asian Network. Zafar debuted his show CAKES at the Edinburgh fringe 2016 and returned the following year with a sell-out run of his follow up show; BISCUIT.

The rest of April is packed with laughs including over 17 acts in total. Throughout the festival Barnsley will welcome popular comedians such as Gary Delaney, one of Britain's leading one-liner comics who returns to the road with another onslaught of lean, expertly crafted gaggery in Gagster’s Paradise. There will also be a show from Carl Hutchinson who will be performing his stand up I Know I Shouldn’t Behave Like This…. At The Electric Theatre. From buying a house to having kids, Carl takes his unique adolescent approach to grown-up issues.

“Captivating...Outstanding...An all-round comic” One4Review, Edinburgh

Music, improv and comedy fans alike, get ready for The Noise Next Door: REMIX!!! Eleven time sell-out veterans of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and one of the country’s most sought after comedy club headliners, the U.K’s premier improv comedy troupe have taken the comedy world by storm. Taking audience suggestions, the cheeky and charming quartet transform them into fantastically funny scenes and songs in the blink of an eye. The Noise Next Door leave audiences everywhere in awe of their lightning-quick wit and totally original comedic talents.

Highlights at The Civic also include stand-up poet Kate Fox: Where There’s Muck There’s Bras. A funny, gently subversive show about the real Northern Powerhouse, Northern Women – the sung and the unsung – writers, scientists, sportswomen, politicians, protesters, musicians and other heroines.

“Kate Fox is funny, quirky and a wonderful writer” Sarah Millican

Alongside The Civic and The Electric Theatre, a variety of venues across the town will host some hilarious evening events including The Garrison, Annie Murray’s Irish Bar, Jocks Cavern, and The Old Picture House, leading to some interesting and intimate nights of laughs with good company. Don’t miss Comedy Club Night at Jocks Cavern featuring the exuberant Ben van der Velde, delightful Abigoliah Schamaun, and slightly bonkers George Egg.

There will also be an excellent selection of acts throughout the month compèred by the fantastic Sean Morley. These names have written gags for some of the most popular TV shows, so even if you don’t know them, you’re likely to know their work. They’ll be the return of Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 Cats writer, Jessica Fostekew who with her sharp storytelling wit makes for delightful company. Steve Bugeja, a writer for Russell Howard and The News Quiz who tours internationally and has been a rising comedy star even since winning the BBC New Comedy Award. Grainne Macguire has written for The Last Leg, 8 out of 10 Cats, The News Quiz, Newjack, and Dead Ringers. Other names include Glenn Moore, Tom Wrigglesworth, Seymour Mace

The majority of tickets are just £8 in advance so book yours now for some guaranteed laughter.

If that wasn’t enough, there is even a comedy show for kids. A dedicated children’s comedy performances made just for little jokers 6 and over, Comedy Club 4 Kids is a swear-free hour with the international circuit’s best stand ups and sketch acts. Non-patronising and pure awesome. Last year was a sell-out success so make sure to book early to avoid disappointment.

As always, the festival will be rounded off with Toby Foster’s much loved Last Laugh Comedy Club at The Civic on Saturday 27 April staring 3 of the best comedians from the UK and International comedy circuit.

So don’t miss out on all the fun. Check out The Civic website to book tickets for these hilarious acts and get a good laugh in this April, god knows you probably need it.

As funny as our April Fools comedians are, they also have potty mouths! So please note, some of these shows may contain strong and explicit language.
