“A fantastic venue with a real buzz about it” Knitwear: Chanel to Westwood Exhibition Launch Event success at The Civic
Earlier this month, The Civic in Barnsley hosted the exhibition launch event for Knitwear: Chanel to Westwood and the Yorkshire Fashion Archive.
Guests included Civic Champion and Barnsley Bard Ian McMillan, Claire Watson and David Bleakhouse from Leeds University School of Design, and Celia Joicey and Dennis Northdruft of the Fashion and Textile Museum:
“It was a delight to be at the launch event for the Knitwear exhibition in Barnsley. The Fashion and Textile Museum are looking forward to the future to build on the experience of partnership working with The Civic.” Dennis Nothdruft (Fashion and Textile Museum)
The Civics’ major autumn exhibition Knitwear: Chanel to Westwood presents over 150 inspirational knitwear pieces from the collection of Mark and Cleo Butterfield, as part of the Fashion and Textile Museum international tour. The exhibition presents highlights from designs by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and rare crocheted evening dresses from the 1930s to late 20th century innovations by Vivienne Westwood. On show from 5 September - 13 November, the unique collection exhibits at The Civic in Barnsley for its only UK tour date outside of London.
Prior to entering The Civic, attendees of the event walked through the ‘Yarn-bombed’ Mandela Gardens; where trees were decorated in knitted fashions. Special guests and supportive partners were then invited to network accompanied by live music from Barnsley’s own Hayley Youell, before previewing the Knitwear: Chanel to Westwood and Yorkshire Fashion Archive exhibitions.
Santander Corporate & Commercial Banking (Barnsley) held their networking event at the Knitwear exhibition launch. Jane Illingworth, Relationship Director from Santander commented:
“This is a fantastic venue and the event had a real buzz about it with lots of people catching up with existing contacts and making new ones from the professional and business community in Barnsley. This was a great networking opportunity and we very much look forward to continuing to be active in the Barnsley marketplace. On the back of this success, we are looking to run similar events at The Civic in the future which hopefully will be as well attended as this one!”
The Civic invited professional and corporate contacts like Santander to the launch to promote their recently implemented Civic Champion schemes. Helen Ball (Chief Executive at The Civic) comments:
“It was great to have Santander and our Business and Community Champions amongst our guests for the launch of our autumn blockbuster exhibition. We at The Civic were thrilled with the response and plan to hold many more events like this as part of our Civic Champions offer.”
David Sinclair (Curator at The Civic) continues:
“The mix of arts and business professionals provided a refreshing dynamic to the launch event and it was clear to see all thoroughly enjoyed the collections. I look forward to seeing the familiar and new faces the exhibitions and knitting workshops will no doubt attract.”
