WASTELAND, the highly anticipated new dance theatre show from Gary Clarke Company, is the sequel to the multi-award-winning COAL.

In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it.

This thrilling yet deeply touching production from acclaimed British choreographer Gary Clarke takes a close look at how two generations coped in an era of radical upheaval.

We follow a group of deprived youths in their search for purpose and escapism in the illegal rave scene of the 1990s, where derelict warehouses and abandoned workspaces became home for a new community of music and dance.

Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by 6 exceptional professional dancers, 4 male singers from local community choirs, 2 brass musicians, film and video projection, and a specially commissioned rave soundscore, WASTELAND dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, tragedy and survival.

"An absorbing, immediate slice of history rendered with the kind of emotional truth that deepens its impact as popular entertainment." ★★★★ The Times (on COAL)
