The Price of Coal Part 1: Meet the People - Barry Hines x Ken Loach
DateTue 15 Oct
The Price of Coal, Part 1: Meet the People.
1977. Dir: Ken Loach. 75 mins.
The second of two classic Barry Hines / Ken Loach collaborations. Rarely screened in public since its first outing as a TV play, Price of Coal is a two part television drama, exploring life at the fictional South Yorkshire Milton Colliery as it prepares for a royal visit and copes with the aftermath of a pit accident.
Part 1 (the comedy) sees the colliery prepare for a royal visit, while Part 2 (the tragedy) saw the site deal with a fatal accident following target-conscious safety shortcuts.
The film is preceded by a performance from Ray Hearne of a new commissioned work, called The Ballad of Wentworth & Elsecar. The film is followed by live music from Parson’s Lot, The Hurriers and Del Scott Miller, whose repertoires are informed by local coal mining history and politics.
