Stan Bulmer: Whispers
Stan Bulmer has had a successful career as a photographer in Barnsley for over 40 years. His father, the late Stan Bulmer Snr, was a well-known photographer for the Barnsley chronicle. In 1978 Stan Jnr and Stan Snr established their business Stan Plus Stan Two, photographing weddings and portraits before becoming the official photographers for Barnsley Football Club.
The pair established their first studio on Peel Street in 1982 specialising in bespoke family and portrait photography. Stan Jnr later worked as the official photographer for nightclub Japanese Whispers. Stan Bulmer: Whispers displays the photographs he took during his time working at the infamous club, capturing celebrity appearances and the lucky clubbers that got to meet them.
This exhibition gives a glimpse of a period of time in the late 1980’s, documenting Northern fashion and nightlife. The Northern 1980’s nightclub scene fused together the influence of Rave and the celebrity culture that revolved around BBC Radio 1, the HI-NRG Stock Aitken Waterman sound and TV programmes such as The Hit Man and Her.
