Looks & Smiles

1981. Dir. Ken Loach. 104 mins.

The first of two classic Barry Hines / Ken Loach collaborations in partnership with Futurist Cinema, Elsecar.

It’s 1980 in Sheffield, Mick and Alan have just left school, full of dreams for the future. But against the background of Thatcher’s Britain the two soon wake up to reality, facing daily rejection in their search for work. It is based on the novel of the same name, written by Barry Hines. The film was entered into the 1981 Cannes Film Festival, where Loach won the Young Cinema Award.

The film is followed by a talk by Dr David Forrest (University of Sheffield), who discusses Barry Hines and his influence of Working Class Film and Fiction.
