Cross The Sky are The Civic’s resident theatre company, made up of actors with learning and physical disabilities and co-ordinated for us by three specialist artists and volunteers.
By using a wide spectrum of art forms the company write and perform original songs, as well as devising their own visual and theatre work that is exciting to watch.
Cross the Sky were originally scheduled to tour their new original theatre production Up in the Attic, in both local and regional venues this year. The Covid-19 pandemic and all the restrictions placed upon the group and their audience meant that not only was the tour of Up in the Attic postponed, but it also mean that long a long period, they could no longer meet in person.
From April 2020 and throughout a number of national lockdowns and closures of The Civic to the public, Cross the Sky has come together online each week to sing, dance, tell stories, paint and most importantly, to reach out and be with their friends in the company.
In September the group started the Rainbow Project, in which each week they explore the images, memories and feelings that they each associate with a specific colour. Often, they were tasked with photographing or filming themselves dancing, singing or sharing a story, using just their mobile devices.
In November, Cross the Sky took over The Civic’s social media to share the Rainbow Project. This is a compilation of just some of their work.
These Zoom sessions have proven an invaluable lifeline to our company members throughout the lockdown and continue to do so while tiered restrictions often mean they still can’t meet in person. For some of our members, Cross the Sky continues to be their only outlet, way of socialising or engaging in culture.
Here are some comments by users and their families:
“My sister gets so much from being a member of Cross the Sky. Meeting over Zoom has helped her keep going.”
“Although my daughter found the Zoom sessions a little confusing at first, she did warm to them and eventually enjoyed meeting everyone online. After the first face to face session in September she was so happy and chatty. It was lovely to see.”
“The Zoom sessions have been a lifeline for my nephew. He has loved seeing his friends each week.”
“I couldn’t wait to get back to seeing my friends online. I have missed them all.”
“I love talking to everyone on Zoom.”
Thank you to our company members, artists, support staff and volunteers for their hard work through this year. And a special thank you to Creative Minds, Barnsley Council Central Area Team and Barnsley CVS for their continued support throughout 2020.
