New Year, New Shows! Celebrate A Brand New Season At The Civic

The Civic are welcoming in the New Year with a fresh new season full of art, fashion, music, theatre and so much more. Here are a few Highlights to show you wants in store.

We start the season with a “Bonjour” as we wake up to the highly anticipated Disney’s Beauty and The Beast Sing-a-Long-a screening, join us for the brand new adaptation of Disney’s iconic fairytale with on-screen lyrics so everyone can join in. They’ll be plenty other oportunities to sing along this year with some terriffic tribites coming to Barnsley.

Music lovers are in for more treats in the gallery too. If you havn’t yet been, don’t miss the Best Art Vinyl: 12 Years on 12 Inches exhibition containing more than 225 vinyl record covers from the last 12 years and showcasing some of the best in design, photography, drawing and many other mediums. Open until 20 January.  Best Art Vinyl: 12 Years on 12 Inches is on from 11 November 2017 to 20 January 2018

After some hugely popular exhibitions in 2017 the Gallery is on a roll as we see the Spring/Summer season taking a fashion focus. In February we will open Beehives, Bobs and Blowdries, a unique collaboration between The Civic, renouned celebrity hair-stylist, Civic Champion and Barnsley lad Andrew Barton and leading fashion research consultant Donna Bevan. This exhibition featuring the top names in hair with a mix of objects, photographs and more as well as a special look at the history of hairdressing in Barnsley. Beehives, Bobs and Blowdries is on from 17 February 2018 to 7 April 2018.

In June our T-shirts exhibition The T-shirt: Cult | Culture | Subversion is sure to start a conversation. We take a look at some of the most influencial T-Shirt designs spanning over 50 years with more than 100 rare and groundbreaking examples featuring many iconic images and slogans including rare surviving pieces by Vivienne WestwoodThe T-shirt: Cult | Culture | Subversion is on 23 June 2018 to 22 September 2018

For children 3-7 and their families we are also proud to present our co commission The Selfish Giant, the famous fable about a selfish man who builds a wall and the child who teaches him to be kind. Families will be delighted with the return of Full House Theatre with The Owl and The Pussycat a story inspired by the nonsense world of Edward Lear all about where, what and who our family really are which also includes exclusive pay what you decide performances of By The Light of The Moon in Barnsley and Mapplewell Library.

There’s some incredible contemporary dance and circus to make everyone’s jaw drop with Hyena performed by the first all-female Alula Cyr troupe and Izindava by Tavazina Dance, performed in a unique style that seamlessly synthesises ballet, contemporary and african dance.

There is even a fusion of sport and dance with The Beautiful Game taking a laugh out loud look at Britains obsession with football and The Strategists a fast-paced mix of storytelling, movement and live music reflecting a passion for rugby.

We are delighted to be bringing some of the top comediens to Barnsley, with the likes of Alun Cochrane, Craig Campbell and Rich Hall standing up on our stage. Get ready to laugh out loud with Barnsley's April Fools Comedy Festival which promises to be a right laugh with stars including Phill Jupitus, John Robins and Stephen Bailey. Time travelling magic duo Morgan & West present a new show chock full of jaw dropping, brain bursting, gasp eliciting feats of magic. And finally to top it all off, The Civic supporter and Barnsley born Toby Foster presents a great night of laughter, hosting some of the best comedians from the UK and international circuit with his Last Laugh Comedy Club in both January and April.
