THE TOY BOX: FROM POP TO PRESENT
29 JULY – 23 SEPTEMBER
The Toy Box: From Pop to Present is a new exhibition, exclusive to The Gallery@ The Civic, exploring the use of toys in the world of contemporary art and design. By using British Pop Art of the 1950s and 1960s as a starting point and the movements it inspired, the exhibition will showcase paintings, prints, photography, fashion and sculpture from around the world. The Toy Box also takes a look at how toy companies have collaborated with artists to create collectable art toys, such as Urban Vinyl.
The exhibition will feature internationally renowned names such as Eduardo Paolozzi, KAWS, Glennray Tutor, Ron English, Paul McCarthy, Jason Freeny, WHATSHISNAME and Anne-Sophie Cochevelou, alongside the best of British contemporary artists and designers, including Sarah Graham, Joe Simpson, Jimmy Cauty, Wayne Chisnall, Laura Keeble, Steve Lovatt and fashion designers Fyodor Golan. From the world of Art Toys, there are works from the famed companies ToyQube, Kidrobot and Mighty Jaxx.
The Civic also welcomes contributions from Yorkshire artists Julie Newton from Barnsley, Doktor A from Todmorden and Fabric Lenny from Holmfirth.
