The Gallery@ is delighted to present the second exhibition in its’
programme of contemporary exhibitions. This shows charts the work
of Walter Giers acclaimed international artist based in the town twinned
with Barnsley, Schwäbisch Gmünd. Born in Germany
in 1937, Giers uses optical and acoustical elements that combine to produce
stunning art pieces, that are on the border line between graphic art,
music and technology.
Giers over the years has been inspired by Constructivism and Kinetic Art
and also by the sculpture of Naum Garbo and Heinz Mack through to the
metamechanic artist Jean Tinguely.
Credit Right to Left: Kleine blaue Musik. 1990. Museum im Prediger Schwäbisch Gmünd, Schieberegister 1973, Meisterstuck 1961.
Heavily based around the use of random number generators and
interactive systems, the artworks have an ever growing number of new variations
produced by the sophisticated electronic workings and unpredictable
internal dynamics.
Throughout his career Giers has received innumerable awards,
decorations and honours for his artwork. In 2007 former German Secretary
of State, Rudolf Böhmler declared Giers to be an
outstanding German artist: “Walter Giers
has been an important driving force behind German
cultural life for decades. He is a brilliant German artist, highly deserving
the credit for his commitment to our society and our commonwealth”
This exhibition brings together a collection of his work charting his
creativity from the earliest design items to his
work today, transforming the gallery@ into a multi sensory
environment.
